The difference is the contract type — and it determines your benefits, your pension, your job security, whether your family is covered, and what the role does for your career three years from now. Here is what each one actually means. Fixed-Term Appointment (FTA) The FTA is the standard UN staff contract and the one most candidates are aiming for. It is issued for a defined period — commonly one year, renewable — against an established post. Status: you are a staff member, with the full framework of staff rules, entitlements and protections. Benefits: participation in the UN Joint Staff Pension Fund, health insurance, annual and sick leave, dependency allowances, and where applicable education grant, relocation and home leave. Security: renewable, but tied to the post and its funding. An FTA carries no automatic expectation of renewal — a point worth remembering when a role is funded by a single project. Career: counts fully as UN service and positions you for internal moves and promotion. Temporary Appointment (TA) A TA covers short-term needs: surge capacity, a peak workload, or a colleague on extended leave.
