The Young Professionals Programme is the UN Secretariat's flagship entry route: an annual, exam-based competition that leads to a fixed-term Professional appointment for candidates at the very start of their careers. It is one of the few ways into the UN system that does not require years of prior experience — and one of the most misunderstood. What the YPP actually is The YPP recruits early-career professionals into entry-level posts in the UN Secretariat. Rather than applying to a single vacancy, you apply to a job family — the exam is held each year in a rotating selection of occupational areas such as administration, human rights, political affairs, statistics, information management, social affairs, or finance. Successful candidates are placed on a roster and appointed to posts as they become available. The two features that define the programme are that it is examination-based rather than CV-based, and that it is nationality-restricted in a very specific way. The three eligibility conditions Eligibility is strict and mechanical. You must satisfy all three: Nationality. You must hold the nationality of a participating country.
